About This Video

Good day, rotten lot. In this video I take the Donner Double Swords off the guitar rig for a minute and drop it into a synth setup, because while it’s aimed at guitar, it’s got reverb, delay, and chorus in one box—and they all sound great for the money. I’m running my Moog Grandmother (mono synth) into it, using a simple patch with one oscillator and the second doing a sample-and-hold into pitch, synced with the arpeggiator, so you can really hear what the effects are doing. The Grandmother has a gorgeous real spring reverb (you can literally hear the springs rattling), but a lot of the time on synth I want that clean, pristine digital space. The Double Swords reverb is lush and flexible, and the tone knob is a big deal because I can pull the top end out of the verb to keep it out of the way of the attack—or punch it straight back in for full-frequency atmosphere. Then I show how easily the delay locks to synth timing for perfect repeats, note-doubling, and big ambient washes when you stack it with reverb. Finally, I fatten up bass lines with the chorus (very Juno vibes), and I mention it’s got extra gain on tap with the level knob if you want to push your channel a bit. For around 100 bucks, it’s a seriously cost-effective way to widen and sweeten a mono synth.
