About This Video

In this video I’m comparing two budget APS-C portrait primes on the Nikon Z fc: the Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 versus the TTArtisan 56mm f/1.8. Both companies sent these over for evaluation, but as always, all opinions are my own. Price is super close—about $129 for the TTArtisan and $139 for the Viltrox—so the whole point is figuring out if that extra $10 actually matters for your shooting. I go through specs and build first: the TTArtisan is a metal/aluminum build and it comes with a better hood for blocking sun, but it’s a little more cumbersome because you have to remove the hood to put the lens cap back on. The Viltrox is smaller and lighter (plastic build), and it’s more convenient day-to-day, plus the USB-C port is on the back of the lens—just keep in mind there’s no weather sealing and I really wish they included a cover. Then I run my usual image tests: bokeh/blur, distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration, flare, sharpness, and portraits. The TTArtisan gives me bigger “bokeh balls,” more noticeable background blur, and nicer skin color tones, plus it can actually cover full-frame mode with minimal vignetting. The Viltrox is sharper overall and controls chromatic aberration better (those four ED elements help), but it does suffer from focus breathing. With only a $10 gap, you can honestly flip a coin—just pick the strengths you care about most.
