About This Video

In this video I put the Nikon Z6III up against the Canon R1 and I’m not doing the usual “spec-sheet Olympics.” I own both Nikon and Canon (Canon for video, Nikon for photo), but I rented this Canon R1 from LensRentals (not sponsored). All the tests you see were done live on my Instagram—raw files, settings, and live autofocus testing—so you can actually see what these cameras do instead of just hearing opinions. I break down pricing (Z6III around $2,200 now vs R1 at about $6,800) and ask the real question: is that extra $4,600 worth it? I go through screens (EVF resolution, monitor brightness readings), ports, batteries, storage, and then I run buffering tests with the same card, lens, and settings. The R1 can shoot 40fps but it buffers, and even at 20fps it still buffers—while the Z6III basically doesn’t buffer in my test. Then I get into image quality (ISO noise, over/underexposed dynamic range pulls) and autofocus in both good light and low light. My takeaway: the R1 has killer EVF and great features like sensor shield and pre-capture RAW, but the autofocus getting distracted in complex scenes is a big problem. Meanwhile, the Z6III is one-third the price, nails human AF in my mannequin test, and keeps strong shadow recovery—yet Nikon still needs to fix missing basics like multi-function hot shoe, sensor shield, and pre-capture RAW.
