About This Video

What’s going on YouTube—this is Lee. In this video I put the Nikon Zf on the table and take a close look at the Viltrox 28mm f4.5 pancake (the super-thin “lens cap” style one), and I compare it side-by-side with Nikon’s 28mm option. Viltrox did send this lens over for evaluation, but like always, all opinions are my own. The big headline: it’s full-frame, it’s autofocus, it’s insanely thin and pocketable, and it’s a fixed f4.5—so you’re stuck at f4.5 forever. I walk through the practical stuff you need to know before buying: there’s no manual focus at all, no filter threads, no lens hood, no IS/VR in the lens, and it’s not weather sealed (front is splash resistant though). Then I show autofocus behavior in good light and low light—Viltrox has a bit of focus breathing and can feel a split-second slower than the Nikon. Image-wise, Viltrox shows heavier vignetting and more flare character, while the Nikon looks clinically clean. For sharpness, I pixel-peep multiple scenes with lens correction on for the Viltrox. Nikon is usually a tad sharper in the corners and often overall, but it’s surprisingly close, and weirdly the Viltrox can look sharper in the bottom-left in my samples. If you’re bored of ultra-clean images and want a fun, compact, film-ish look for about $100, this little pancake is a solid grab—just be patient with AF and accept the limitations.
