About This Video

In this video I put my own Leica Q up against my own Nikon Zf paired with the Nikkor Z 28mm f/2.8, and I run them through the same kind of long, image-quality tests I always do. I start with price and quick specs (both 24MP full-frame, but the Zf is BSI), then I go over the real-world stuff: EVF/monitor differences, screen brightness, I/O ports, battery cost, buffer, build quality, and little handling quirks—like that Leica drive switch that keeps landing me in continuous and firing off five shots for no reason. From there it’s all about the files: distortion, vignetting, bokeh balls, ISO noise, chromatic aberration, flare, sunburst, dynamic range (overexposed and underexposed pulls), compression/background blur, macro, and sharpness across the frame. My takeaway is pretty simple: the Nikon Zf is the modern “do-everything” body—autofocus is on another level and dynamic range/ISO performance is better. But if we’re talking pure image quality from these specific 28mm setups, the Leica Q’s Summilux has that sharpness, rendering, sunburst character, and insane macro capability that the Nikon 28mm can’t match. Just know the Q has real downsides: battery life, no weather sealing, 1080p video, vintage AF, electronic shutter weirdness past 1/2000, and repair risk on older 2015 tech.
