About This Video

In this video I put my two daily-driver bodies head-to-head: Canon R5 Mark II vs Canon R6 Mark II. I break down the real-world differences that actually matter—price (about a $2,300 gap), 24MP vs 45MP, stacked vs standard full-frame sensor, EVF/screen differences, ports (full HDMI on the R5II vs micro HDMI on the R6II), batteries, and card slots. Then I get into the stuff you guys really care about: buffer behavior, autofocus, ISO noise, color matching, and dynamic range push/pull. The big takeaway is this: the R5II gives you the extra resolution, C-Log2, cooling vents (and compatibility with Canon’s cooling grip), and better highlight recovery in my overexposed tests—plus it tracks better for certain low-light animal scenarios. But it’s not perfect: I ran into moments where the R5II couldn’t detect me while the R6II could, and I’m still calling the R5II autofocus “needs firmware updates.” On the flip side, the R6II’s 40 fps is nice on paper but buffers fast on UHS-II, and for underexposed shadow recovery the R6II straight-up outperformed the R5II. So depending on whether you live in the highlights, the shadows, or need resolution, either one can be the right tool.
