About This Video

In this video, I review “Rye Law Fife” (I’m still not 100% sure I’m pronouncing it right) as a single grain Scotch whisky, and I do it the way I always like to test things: three ways. I go neat first, then with a splash of water, and finally on the rocks—because the same bottle can behave very differently depending on how you drink it. Neat, it’s surprisingly subtle on the nose—very gentle—but once I taste it, I can actually pick up the full picture. For me, neat is where I could taste everything and it was very nice. With water, it opens up and gets more floral (it’s super floral in my nose), but the trade-off is the burn—like, the burn just doesn’t leave my throat and it hangs around for a very long time. On the rocks is a very close match to neat, just nicer because it’s chilled, it glides down, and there’s basically zero burn. The chill does lighten the flavour a bit, so if you want the strongest flavour, go neat; if you want it smooth, go rocks. If you like being tortured… add water.
