In this video, I review the Archie Rose Rye Malt whisky in my usual three-way test: neat, with a bit of special water, and on the rocks. I start by checking the nose—straight away I get that slightly aged vibe with a clear oaky, woody character. Because it’s a work day tomorrow, I keep it sensible and measure out my pours, then let the whisky breathe a little and get into the tasting. Neat was the clear winner for me. It’s stronger, has more flavour, and just feels more “complete” on my palate. Adding water was the one I liked least—yes, it reduced the burn a bit at first, but I got this bland feeling at the back of my tongue that I really didn’t enjoy (and interestingly, the burn can even feel stronger for some people with water). On the rocks, I noticed a bitter note coming up, but I still found it enjoyable—just don’t let it sit too long if you want to keep the flavour punch. Basically: neat is my pick, rocks can work, water… not for me here.
