About This Video

Bars open. In this video, I review a bottle of Regency Thai VSOP brandy that my good friend Ian gave me—something you usually can’t easily find in Singapore unless you hunt online. I remember drinking this in Krabi during a company trip and thinking it was surprisingly good for the price (about 500 THB / ~20 SGD for 350ml at 38% ABV), so I wanted to re-test it properly with Belle and see if my memory was accurate. I taste it three ways: neat, with warm water, and on the rocks. Neat, the nose is not very pleasant—very “nail polish remover” / lacquer vibe—but the taste is much better than it smells. It’s sweet, fruity, and very easy to drink, with a light, gentle burn that stops around my sternum instead of going all the way down. With warm water (around 45°C), the woody/drier notes show up, the fruity part drops off, but it becomes even easier to drink and doesn’t feel diluted even when I add quite a bit. On the rocks, the artificial/nail-polish character becomes more prominent, and I lose the sweetness and finish—so for this bottle, I don’t recommend ice. My conclusion: Regency VSOP is best enjoyed with warm water (yes, those KTV warm-water brandy people… they know what they’re doing).
