About This Video

In this video, I’m trying something a bit different from the usual whisky and gin—an offshoot from the classic Taiwan Beer: the Double Hops Lager. I stumbled across it at a Taiwan eatery near my office (not a supermarket find for me), and it worked out to about S$5 per can for a standard 330ml. The first thing that caught my attention was the can design and the branding—“super fresh lager beer”, “double hops”, and the Chinese word “shwang” (bliss/absolute enjoyment). So of course, I had to see if it actually lives up to that promise. I pour it into a glass I keep in the freezer because I like my beer icy cold, and I pour it a bit more haphazardly so the foam stays in the glass instead of in my stomach (less bloat, more drinking). In the glass, it looks very pale yellow and very light—which makes sense because it’s only 3.5% ABV (honestly, a bit disappointing on paper). On the nose, it’s got that standard macro brewery smell. On the taste test, it’s definitely a light beer, but it’s also quite bitter—more bitter than the standard Taiwan Beer, and that bitterness lingers on the tongue. Still, it’s very refreshing, especially in warm weather. It’s not quite as “blissful” as the name suggests, but if you see it at around S$5 with dinner in Singapore, I’d say it’s worth getting.
