I’ve been using the Canon EOS R3 for quite a while now, and as much as I like it bare (light, ergonomic, just nice to shoot with), there are real jobs where I need to break it out properly—monitor, mic, extra mounting points… and the R3 only gives you one hot shoe. So I went cage-hunting and, somehow, there’s basically only one option: the SmallRig EOS R3 Cage. That’s what this video is—me walking through the features, how it installs, and what I genuinely like and dislike after using it on multiple photo and video jobs. What I love is how streamlined it is. It hugs the R3’s shape, doesn’t add unnecessary bulk, and SmallRig actually uses anti-twist locks that grab the camera lugs so the cage doesn’t shift around. You get two cold shoe mounts (rare), Arca-Swiss compatibility, strap mount options (I run Peak Design anchor links), and the side grip area is curved so it doesn’t dig into your palm. But I’m also very honest about the big downside: the left-side “port protection / vertical Arca” area is cumbersome. Angled mic/headphone plugs are annoying to access, and the flip screen can hit the cage, which is a huge oversight for run-and-gun video. Still, if this is the only R3 cage available, it’s a pretty damn good option.
