Portkeys recently sent out their L-Eye ii for me to check out. I've been in the market for an EVF on a budget for my Canon C70 as the camera doesn't have an EVF. Whilst Portkeys did send out this uni for me to review, they didn't ask or review this video prior. I think the L-Eye ii is a fantastic value for money despite some of it's shortcomings. Fits perfectly with my Canon C70 and is now a permanent part of my rig. About This Video

Yo what’s up guys, Sam here. In this video I’m doing a real world review of the Portkeys L-Eye II EVF on my Canon C70—because the C70 doesn’t have an EVF and I’ve been looking for something budget that actually makes sense on a working rig. I go through the core specs (2.4 inch display, 1440x900, takes up to a 4K signal, around 300 nits, HDMI in, powered by an LPE6 or DC) but honestly, I care way more about usability than spec sheets. For me an EVF is about that third point of contact and being able to see my image in a more private, intimate way when I’m out shooting. The biggest wins are size and weight—this thing is tiny, super easy to place anywhere on the rig, and it starts up fast (like 1–3 seconds). I also like the focus/exposure assist tools; I personally use false color, zoom, and peaking. It’s also surprisingly sharp for such a small screen, and it’s survived a couple of drops with just some nicks. But there are real downsides: the eyecup is thin, you can get light leaks, and you end up pressing into it (which smudges the glass). The cover can also come off, and the 2.4 inch image can feel too small for critical frame analysis. Out of the box it has a weird magenta tint, so I treat it as composition + stability, not color-critical monitoring.
