In this video I finally unbox the Canon EOS R3—one of (if not the) first purchasable units in Malaysia. I’ve actually had it sitting for two days because December work has been crazy, but I wanted to properly experience the unboxing together with you. I go through what’s in the box (that massive eyecup, the usual paperwork, strap I’ll never use), and my first impressions once the body is in-hand. I also mention I’m testing a new RØDE mic setup while filming this. More importantly, I break down why I bought the R3 as a hybrid camera for both photo and video. I love my 1DX Mark III (it’s still my favourite digital photo camera), but the R3 fixes a few real-world issues for me—especially transport size (that 1DX “forehead” in bags), mirrorless workflow, and ergonomics. I care a lot about quick photo/video switching and moving AF points, so the smart controller and the dedicated toggle matter to how I shoot street and client work. I also share what I found from using a pre-production R3 for a full week: fast readout with electronic shutter (way less jello), solid low-light (about a stop better than my 1DX3), a flip screen that adds a ton of flexibility, and genuinely great 4K/6K RAW. But I’m also honest: 1080p looks terrible to me, eye-control AF feels more like a gimmick, and the micro HDMI is a weird choice. I’ll follow up with a longer-term review after a few months of real jobs and street use.
