How "Creativity" is Hurting you as a Photographer

It's been quite awhile since my last upload and the previous uploads were very gear focused too. Wanted to talk about something I've been thinking a lot for awhile. Creativity often times has been used as crutch to shield ourselves from negative feedback or descriptions of our work that we don't necessarily like. We see it all them in comments and sometimes in our own responses. Awhile back I posted a video about mistakes street photographers are making and some people took it a little too personally and reached out saying how I shouldn't gate keep things and that I didn't know what I was talking about. I think a lot of these reactions, sometimes including my own, stem from insecurities that we might have towards our work and maybe, in ourselves. About This Video

In this video I wanted to get a bit more philosophical and talk about something I’ve been thinking about for a long time—especially in the age of Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. I keep seeing (and sometimes doing) this thing where we hide behind “creativity” whenever someone criticizes our work. Stuff like “haters gonna hate,” “I’m only doing it for me,” or “this is my creative expression.” On the surface, yeah—if someone’s just hating with zero constructive feedback, you shouldn’t care. But constructive feedback isn’t hate, and I think a lot of our defensive reactions come from insecurity and ego, even if we don’t want to admit it. I share a real example from my street photography mistakes video—some people took it personally and told me I was gatekeeping, or that I didn’t know what I was talking about. And I get it, because I’ve been there too. The problem is when “creativity” becomes a crutch to avoid admitting there’s room to improve. To me, a truly great photographer isn’t just someone with big clients or awards—it’s someone who evolves. Not switching genres overnight, but being able to look back at your work (even from yesterday), accept mistakes, and actually do something about them. If you use “creative vision” to justify everything, you’re robbing yourself of growth—and in the long run, that hurts your photography.
