Got my hands on the brand new RF 70-200 F4 IS USM for a couple of days. I tried my best to bring it out on a couple of shoots (not many due to the lockdown) to test it out. This isn't a review because I believe reviews should come from long term use, but rather and in depth first look/impressions of this lens. I wanted to answer a few questions such as size, weight, bokeh and usability. After a few days of testing out the lens, I feel I have a good idea on what this lens is good at and where it fails. I also briefly compare it to the 2.8 version. Hope this video helps! About This Video

When Canon introduced the RF 70-200 f2.8, it kind of shook the industry because 70-200s were always known to be heavy, big, and bulky. In this video, I’m looking at the RF 70-200 f4 IS USM—an even smaller and lighter version of an already tiny lens—and I’m treating it as a first impressions / in-depth look, not a long-term review. I go through the stuff people actually care about: size, weight, bokeh, usability, and where this lens is strong (and where it falls short). All the sample photos and videos you see were shot on this lens. Optically, it’s basically what you’d expect from modern RF glass: very sharp corner-to-corner, minimal vignetting, and flare control is strong thanks to the coatings. I also talk about IS (including that “floating elements” thing that can look scary until you power the camera on), autofocus behavior at 200mm—especially in backlit/low light situations—and build quality, including the barrel extension that a lot of people hate. Personally, I see that extension as a necessary evil for the size/weight gains. At the end, I break down who this lens is for: people who travel, move around a lot, shoot long days (weddings, photojournalism), and want pro-looking compression without carrying a brick. It’s not really the lens for me because I still prefer the flexibility of f2.8, but I can’t deny how impressive the f4 is if portability is your priority.
