In this episode, we’re back in Idaho tackling Boulder Basin, a trail that took us completely by surprise. What started as a scenic climb with 3 Colorado ZR2s quickly turned into one of the most challenging routes we’ve faced, complete with winching, tight lines, and underbody trail damage to keep things interesting. But the payoff? Absolutely worth it. At the top, we reached a breathtaking alpine lake surrounded by towering mountain peaks, making every obstacle along the way feel like part of the adventure. Is Boulder Basin the hardest trail in Idaho? Come along for the ride and decide for yourself. Make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you don’t miss the next episode! About This Video

We’re just north of Ketchum, Idaho, and what was supposed to be a “hit Boulder Basin and head back down” kind of day turned into straight-up chaos. I rolled in with Richard in his 2nd gen ZR2 and our new buddy Nathan in his 3rd gen ZR2 Bison, and the trail completely surprised us. It starts off pretty scenic, then quickly turns into tight shelf sections, steep rock, loose dirt, and waterfall-style climbs where traction just disappears. Between bad lines, not asking for spotters when I should’ve, and the rear digging into soft dirt, winching became the smart move—because I’m not here to “risk it for the biscuit” when the truck is getting pushed into stumps and rocks. We also put our rigs (and skids) to work. My transfer/transmission AEV skid and Level Up evap skid took hits, my shock skids got chewed up, and my driveshaft got scratched and dented—drive shaft mutilation, basically. Nathan’s Bison took frame hits, muffler damage, and his aluminum driveshaft dented harder than mine (I’m running the upgraded GM steel shaft). Richard’s list was the wildest: CV boot issues, frame/slider hits, a rear main seal leak concern, and even a cracked transfer case. We ended the day doing damage assessments at an alpine lake camp… and then I found a rear diff leak. Boulder Basin doesn’t play.
