We take on one of the toughest trails in the San Rafael Swell, Devil’s Racetrack. Rated a 6, this trail absolutely delivers with a mix of technical climbs, rocky obstacles, and nonstop challenges that put both driver and rig to the test. But it’s not all about the difficulty; this trail serves up endless panoramic views of distant arches and towering rock spires that make every mile worth it. From steep climbs to unexpected moments on the trail, including a recovery, this run had it all. About This Video

We’re back out in the San Rafael Swell taking on what I’d call the hardest trail out here: Devil’s Racetrack. It’s rated a 6, and it absolutely earns it—rock ledges right out of the gate, cliff-hugging sections with insane views, and that razorback off-camber stretch where we were seeing 21–23 degrees of roll. The big takeaway early on is simple: slow and steady wins. On those ledges, smooth brake modulation is everything, because the moment you come crashing down and the suspension compresses, that’s when you start tagging diffs, bumpers, and everything you care about. The main event is the hardest obstacle on the trail: a stepped climb with ledges that just keep getting bigger, plus a bypass that’s “easier,” but still not easy. I ran it and went double locked for the last ledge because I’d rather make it in one shot than get stuck and load the drivetrain for no reason. We also had an “ultra spicy” moment where Richard got high-centered and turtled, so we stacked rocks, hooked up a strap, tensioned it slow, and gave him a small pull to slide him off safely. And I also break down why I’ve switched to Trails Offroad—because calling this trail a 4/10 (like OnX does) can get people in trouble.
