About This Video

Good morning from the San Juan Mountains—this is Episode 4 of my San Juan series and we’re tackling Black Bear Pass, the one everyone calls the most dangerous in the San Juans for a reason. We split into two groups right off the bat: me, Richard, and Paul headed up Black Bear, while my dad and brother ran Ophir because he wasn’t comfortable with his skill level on this trail. I’m never going to push someone into a trail they’re not mentally ready for—off-roading is just as much in your head as it is under your tires. We climbed to the summit at 12,840 ft, soaked in the views, and then committed to the one-way descent where turning back isn’t an option. I walk through the “Tipsy” obstacles (1, 2, and 3), the Steps, and the infamous tight switchbacks near Ingram Falls—using terrain mode/one-pedal drive and my cameras to stay slow, controlled, and on line. The big takeaway: these obstacles can look easy on camera, but one wrong line can put you over the edge. With patience, a good spotter, and solid trail info, Black Bear is an absolute blast—capped off with Bridal Veil Falls as the final reward.
