About This Video

A little over a year ago I shot my last roll of Fujifilm Superia 400 in Colorado and it honestly blew me away, so I tried to buy more. The problem is finding fresh Superia 400 is way harder than it should be, so I did what I usually do: I lowballed a bunch of eBay listings and ended up with seven rolls of expired Superia 400—these ones were expired by about 18 years. In this video I shot two of those rolls on a hike with my brother, and I walk through what the scans actually looked like once I got home and did the whole scanning/converting process myself. The big takeaway: expired film can be great, or it can be wildly inconsistent. On my first roll I saw these weird dots/streaks that were strongest at the start of the roll and then faded away, and I still don’t fully know what caused it (I refrigerate all my film, so if you have ideas, tell me). The second roll didn’t have the dot issue, but it did need more color correction, with noticeable shadow color shifts and increased grain—classic expired-film behavior, especially when it likely wasn’t stored cold. I also talk a bit about where I’m at with film right now: I still love shooting it, but the backend (developing, scanning, converting) makes me want to savor film more and move my day-to-day workflow to digital.
