About This Video

In this video I’m shooting portraits with my Fujifilm X100VI and walking you through what worked (and what I’d do differently) from a real, time-crunched session that literally got rained out. I meant to record more behind-the-scenes on my DJI Osmo Pocket 3, but we were racing the weather, so I put all my focus into actually making photos. I used off-camera flash for the very first setup—just a cheap flash (the newer Visico 4, I think) into a large Godox umbrella—and then everything else was natural light. I talk about why the X100VI is genuinely interesting for portraits even though it’s a fixed 23mm f/2 (35mm equivalent). The 40MP sensor gives me a ton of room to crop when I want something tighter, and most of the shoot was wide open at f/2 (with the first setup at f/2.8 for exposure). I also touch on the lens’ weird “bokeh squeezing/pulling” look you can get when you’re close to a subject—something I’ve seen in my own shots and other people’s—plus why that might be more obvious with the higher-res sensor. Finally, I get into my editing and printing plans: I shot film on my Pentax 645N too, developed it at home, and honestly the film didn’t turn out the way I wanted. The digital files looked better, and I’m experimenting with a process where I print a digital file and rescan it to get more of that soft, paper-based feel (RA-4 handprint vibes) without chasing a perfect match.
