About This Video

In this video I’m using my Fujifilm X100VI (yeah, the extremely popular one that was honestly a bit difficult to get my hands on) to test the most popular Fujifilm “recipes” I could find online—so you don’t have to. A huge reason the X100V blew up on social media was the whole custom film simulation recipe thing, and I wanted to see what actually holds up when you take it out into real light and start shooting. I pulled everything from Fuji X Weekly and ran a total of seven recipes, plus I show you my own edit of a RAW file for comparison. The recipes I tested were Kodachrome 64, Kodak Portra 400, Kodak Portra 800, Pacific Blues, Reala Ace, 1976 Kodak, and Kodak Tri-X 400 (the only black-and-white one I tried). I shot them in two lighting scenarios—overcast and bright midday sun—so you can get a feel for how each one behaves. I’ve never been much of a JPEG shooter because I like having full control in Lightroom, but this test actually convinced me a JPEG + RAW workflow makes a lot of sense. Portra 800 stood out the most (and sometimes Pacific Blues), but I’d still tweak things—especially white balance and the grain, because some of these are just too warm indoors and the grain can be pushed way too far for my taste.
