About This Video

In this video I take my (very) broken Pentax 645N out into the real world anyway, because I still wanted to see what it could do. The main issue with my body is an autofocus problem—it backfocuses pretty severely—so the AF is basically useless. The viewfinder is also dirty, but mechanically it seems solid: film advance, metering, shutter speeds… everything else sounds accurate. So I shot it like a manual-focus-only medium format camera and brought along my three lenses: the 45mm f/2.8, 75mm f/2.8, and 120mm f/4 macro. I’m also using this as an excuse to get out and explore Tennessee after moving to the Nashville area. I scouted Jackson Falls with two rolls of Kodak Gold 200 (only shot one), and I’ll be honest—I wish I’d brought a tripod. Between tree cover and clouds, I ended up wide open a lot and handholding slower shutter speeds than I’d prefer, especially on the 75mm and 120mm. The big takeaway: Gold 200 held up really well for a darker waterfall scene, and the 645 format feels like the right direction for where I want my photography to go. I decided to keep the system, order a new 645N body, and part out this one—so you’ll definitely see more 645N content soon.
