About This Video

In this video I’m talking about something I think gets missed a lot in camera conversations: how good an “old” sensor can actually be when you’re making real photos instead of reading spec sheets. I break down what’s inside my Fujifilm GFX 50S II—the Sony IMX 161 (51.4MP, 44x33mm, 14-bit)—and why it has such a long history across a ton of medium format systems, from Fujifilm bodies to digital backs from Hasselblad, Phase One, and even Pentax. I also touch on the whole “is it true medium format?” debate by comparing it to 120 film (like my Yashica Mat 124G), while still pointing out how much larger this sensor is than full frame. The big takeaway is simple: the IMX 161 is my favorite sensor I’ve ever used because of how it responds to the way I edit—especially with tone curves. That response is pure magic for my workflow, even if the camera isn’t perfect on paper. I’m honest about the tradeoffs: newer sensors win in autofocus tech and low-light performance, and the GFX’s contrast-detect AF isn’t the fastest. But I shoot slower, and I don’t need AI tracking to make the kind of images I like—so for me, this “older” sensor is still amazing.
