Do you really need an XPAN?

Do you really need an XPAN? For myself and many others, the Hasselblad XPAN is a holy grail camera. It has to be one of the most unique cameras ever produced and its price reflects that. As much as I'd like to own and shoot with one, the hefty price tag and questionable reliability keep me away. Maybe one day it'll be a camera that I could justify owning, but for the foreseeable future, it doesn't make sense for me to buy. - My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelbennettphoto/ My Website: https://www.michaelbennettphoto.com My Email: OfficialMichaelBennett@gmail.com - Gear I used in this video: Fujifilm GFX 100S: https://amzn.to/41Jsxj1 Fujifilm X100VI: https://amzn.to/3V5KYus Sony a7rii: https://amzn.to/4fBuJPi Panasonic Lumix S5II: https://amzn.to/47uQ371 Panasonic LUMIX S9: https://amzn.to/41F3zlD Live AIR 3 Smart PD-BTMP-S: https://amzn.to/4hrUUId Epson V600: https://amzn.to/4kPzXcw Gitzo Tripod: https://amzn.to/4hJEawH Viltrox Monitor: https://amzn.to/3YXfWaR Aputure 120DII: https://amzn.to/4dVrLTt ZHIYUN CINEPEER CX100: https://amzn.to/3Xgr1D1 Zhiyun M20C RGB Light: https://amzn.to/4hpszSY Hollyland Lark M2: https://amzn.to/3WW5K11 Freewell V2 Magnetic VND & Snow Mist 1/4: https://amzn.to/4hRUc7b NiSi JetMag Pro Filter Kit: https://amzn.to/4guToUx - - - - - - - fujifilm gfx camera, gfx 100s 100sii 100ii, fujifilm x100vi x100 x100v, Sony a7rii a7r a7riii a7riv a7rv, leica m240 m262 m10 m10r m11, Hasselblad Xpan Xpan ii fujifilm tx-1 tx-2, Panasonic Lumix s5ii s5iix s5 s1r s1rii s1ii s1, nikon d850

About This Video

If you clicked on this, you’re probably at least a little interested in the Hasselblad XPAN—because I am too. It’s one of those holy grail cameras that’s gotten more and more popular, and the prices have absolutely skyrocketed. I’ve had a few chances to buy one over the years, but I’ve always backed out for the same reason: the electronics. I don’t want to spend $4–5K just to end up with a paperweight if something fails, and right now that reliability question is a big part of the “do you really need one?” conversation. Since I don’t own an XPAN, I decided to get familiar with the format in a practical way—by shooting and cropping to the 65x24 aspect ratio. I revisited older work and also shot in-camera using my Fujifilm GFX100S, including a walk around Nashville (Printers Alley, Broadway) and a trip to a local waterfall with some vintage Olympus OM lenses. Along the way I break down what makes the XPAN unique (it’s basically a medium format rangefinder that shoots 35mm film), how the crop factor affects field of view, and why the pano look is both awesome and honestly a little wider than I prefer. At the end of the day, I’d rather put that kind of money into experiences—like a trip—than tie it up in one expensive, uncertain camera.
