About This Video

Growing up, I would go to Taiwan every summer to visit my grandparents in Hualien (on the east coast), and this trip felt extra special because I hadn’t been back in a few years. I stayed with them for almost two months this past March, and I made sure my Fujifilm X100V was always with me. Going into it, I really wanted to do my best to capture the essence of the city and the people—quiet mornings, coastal views, and all the little in-between moments that make Hualien feel like home. In this video I’m sharing a photo diary of Taiwan through my lens: early mornings at the local market with my grandma, a visit to Qixingtan (a famous beach in Hualien), and a stop at the harbor to buy fish and take in the mountains. We also went up a mountain to visit a temple my grandpa used to go to with his dad when he was a kid—one of my favorite photos from the whole trip came from the temple gates overlooking the bridge between downtown and the mountain. I also included a little coastal road trip (including a cave shaped like a car), a walk to the beach with my brother Kenny, and night photos from bright streets, the local night market, and a shopping district in Taipei.
