In this video I took the legendary Fujifilm X-Pro1 back out into the real world to see what Fuji’s original “photography first” vision actually felt like. It was their first APS-C X-mount camera and the first ever X-Trans sensor (2012), and I bought mine as an old shop display model for a bit of a steal. I wanted to test the claim I keep seeing online—that the original X-Trans has the best Fujifilm color science ever—plus I needed a fun, lower-stress street camera for trips (Mexico and Brazil) where I don’t want to carry anything too expensive. Image quality genuinely surprised me. Even with the older 16MP-era X-Trans 1 sensor, the RAW files grade fantastic in Lightroom, there’s plenty of dynamic range to recover exposure, and the images are sharper than I expected. The hybrid viewfinder is a massive part of the charm too—switching between OVF and EVF gives you that rangefinder feel, and the OVF framing not lining up perfectly actually makes shooting more interesting because you get that little “unknown” moment. I also talk about the quirks: older Fuji-style AF, a pretty bad screen (I ended up leaning into an analog approach and riding exposure comp), and the notorious rear command dial failure that can break usability with lenses that don’t have aperture rings. Then I get into my frustration with Fujifilm’s recent direction—pricing, hype, and “content creator” products—because after using the X-Pro1, it’s hard not to feel like they’ve neglected one of the best camera lines they ever made.
