If your photos are soft, I can almost guarantee it’s not your lens—and it’s definitely not your camera. In this video I break down the real reasons images look “not quite sharp,” and it starts with understanding perceived sharpness (acutance). Directional light gives you that clean edge contrast that feels tack sharp, while flat overcast light, shade with no fill, sea spray, or heat haze can scatter light and kill those edges before you even press the shutter—especially on longer lenses above 85mm. From there I walk through what I call a five-step sharpness process. Gear matters (kinda), but settings matter more: I explain why cheap UV filters can soften images, why higher megapixel bodies can actually look softer due to magnified camera shake, and why I leave electronic first curtain shutter on for dramatically less vibration. Then we get into focus modes (AF-C vs AF-S vs manual), the “sharpness triangle” (aperture sweet spots, shutter speed guidelines, and ISO choices), and simple stability techniques like using the EVF, tucking elbows in, and not death-gripping the camera.
