About This Video

Twelve months ago I got genuinely bored of my portrait work — not because the photos were “bad”, but because I was repeating the same safe shots over and over. The big realization was this: boring portraits don’t come from bad technique, they come from no direction. In this video I break down the exact steps I used to pull myself out of that rut, starting with shooting with intent. Instead of chasing new gear, new lenses, or “better” locations, I now ask one simple question before a shoot: does this move me closer to the work I actually want to make? I’d rather plan more, shoot less, and come away with 10–15 strong images that serve a purpose. From there, I talk about stepping outside your style (I’m a natural light, beach/lifestyle guy, but learning flash in the studio changed how I see light everywhere). I also explain why you need to shift your focus away from the same eye-focused, shallow depth-of-field look and start building depth with layers, bolder lighting, and even color harmony. Then I finish with rapid-fire tips you can use today: kill a comfortable habit, stop overshooting the same frame, limit your color palette, choose wardrobe before location, and always put light first. Portraits are mostly done in-camera — the edit is just the last 20%.
