In this video I break down why I chose it over the Sony A7V (and why I felt Sony dropped the ball), plus the real-world stuff that matters when you’re actually shooting paid work: how the RAW files behave, how the camera handles, and what the final images look like once you’re editing. The big win for me is that new 32MP full-frame sensor. It’s the perfect middle ground—enough resolution to crop and keep things crispy, without the annoying downsides of ultra-high megapixels like massive files, magnified shake, extra noise, and lenses getting exposed. Editing-wise, I’m not here to sell you “Canon colors” hype—I edit in Adobe Color for consistency across brands—but Canon’s tonal curve response gives me that smooth highlight rolloff into the midtones that just favors skin. The trade-off is you don’t get that Sony/Nikon-style shadow recovery if you mess up exposure. For video, Canon finally delivered the stuff I actually care about: internal open gate and internal RAW. I share the caveats (storage and playback), my preferred setup (7K open gate at 25fps in C-Log2), and then I get into my biggest complaint: RF lens options. Canon’s blocking third-party full-frame lenses is brutal, and their “budget” 45mm f/1.2 was honestly one of the worst lenses I’ve used—so I’m leaning into EF glass with an adapter for character without paying the Canon Mafia tax.
