The Nikon Zf is genuinely my favourite camera I’ve owned in the last half decade. The files are gorgeous, autofocus is great, and it’s a proper hybrid for photo and video—but the retro body creates a weird problem: most Z-mount lenses just don’t match the look, and the ergonomics mean I really care about small, compact glass that still performs with no real compromises. In this video I run through my five favourite lenses for the Zf, counting up from #5 to my top pick(s), with aesthetics and real-world results as the main criteria. I start with the Nikon 40mm f/2, which is an ironically brilliant “kit” lens: sharp, minimal distortion/vignette, doesn’t flare much, and it actually suits the Zf visually (even if it’s basically plastic). Then I get into adapting Sony E-mount lenses using the Megadap E-to-Z autofocus adapter—because it works, and it opens up options Nikon simply doesn’t offer. My most-used combo becomes 28mm + 50mm + 90mm, with the Sigma 50mm f/2 and Sigma 90mm f/2.8 being absolute staples. Finally, for the best-looking setup with a modern-yet-vintage render, I land on the Thypoch Simera f/1.4 lenses (manual focus) for that 3D pop, beautiful flare control, and a character that just suits the Zf perfectly—plus a Lightroom tip for handling lens profiles when adapting glass.
