I couldn’t sleep, so I ended up spending a couple late nights tucked into my mixed media sketchbook, sketching Korean temples and just letting the page be a little sanctuary. This is very much a “sketch with me” and not a tutorial—more of a quiet, cozy reset where you can pull out whatever sketchbook and paint you love and just recharge alongside me. I start with a simple Graphitint sketch (I used Chestnut) and talk through how I’m thinking about inspiration, composition, and perspective as I build the temple shapes. Then I bring back one of my favorite sets: the Holbein Irodori Autumn gouache. I’m painting under that soft, overcast kind of lighting that makes colors feel extra gentle, and the last sketch honestly gets out of hand—in the best way—with lots of gouache layers. I also chat a bit about how I personally think about acrylics vs watercolor vs gouache, and why gouache feels so satisfying for layered details like woodwork, textures, and all the greenery. By the end, it’s one of those sessions where the process calms me down… and the final result surprises me.
