A slow art vlog for you to paint and sketch along with... as I paint color studies, sketches for new book illustrations, and try out new techniques on character art. I'm also preparing for a book fair and wanted to chat about practicing fundamentals VS actually painting the art you want. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts - have you ever reached the point where you feel like you're just sketching and practicing, never feeling ready for your dream projects? 💙 Patreon : https://www.patreon.com/EvelynePark Shop & Portfolio : https://www.evydraws.com/shop Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/evydraws/ Allergy season has started, so I'm sorry if my voice sounds a bit nasally in parts! 😅 "Fangs for Nothing" Kickstarter : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/steffmetal/fangs-for-nothing-limited-edition-illustrated-hardcover Learn more about using acrylic mediums for mixed media art: https://www.muddycolors.com/2023/02/acrylics-part-1-working-time/ https://www.muddycolors.com/author/rovinacai/ ✧ ART MATERIALS ✧ Spring Palette: https://amzn.to/4mUY3CM Winter Palette: https://amzn.to/3HZQUCC Arches paper : https://amzn.to/4s6lYCd Arches paper (larger) : https://amzn.to/4sPgs7g ProArte Set UK - https://tidd.ly/3Njm762 US - https://tidd.ly/4sKy70z Derwent Drawing: https://amzn.to/4mO4jN8 Mixed Media sketchbook : https://amzn.to/4rP2nqi Derwent Lightfast (I use Mars Violet and Mars Orange) UK - https://tidd.ly/4cNwAkL US - https://tidd.ly/4sNvYAv Golden Acrylic Paints : https://amzn.to/3PMGp71 OPEN acrylic paints : https://amzn.to/449lgIu (I mix my OPEN and Fluid paints with the regular heavy body acrylics for more control over drying time and texture.) About This Video

In this slow, behind-the-scenes art vlog, I’m taking you along while I plan out some bookish illustration ideas, paint a few colour studies, and sketch character concepts while prepping for an upcoming book fair. It’s very much a “paint and sketch along with me” kind of session—cozy, a little meandering, and focused on the real, unglamorous middle stage of making art: figuring things out on paper before anything feels “final.” I also chat a bit (in my slightly allergy-season voice, sorry!) about what I’m thinking as I test new approaches and try to nudge my character work forward. A big theme in this video is that tug-of-war between practicing fundamentals and actually making the art you want to make. I’ve definitely felt that loop of “I’m not ready yet, I should practice more,” and I wanted to talk through it while I’m actively working on pieces that matter to me. My takeaway is that studies and fundamentals are important, but they’re most helpful when they’re feeding directly into your dream projects—so you’re learning in context, not just endlessly warming up. If you’ve ever felt stuck in practice mode, I’d genuinely love to hear how you’ve navigated that.
