A sketching & painting process video as I try to dig into my favorite art supplies and techniques and discover what my art style is all about... Original painting can be found here https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1274289520729731&set=a.1274276664064350 as part of the Bad Apple Artists Collective "Essence" event. I often worry that with all my doodles, fantasy art, travel sketchbooks, movie scene studies and so on, and so forth, my art style is undefined. What really makes our art essence? Be prepared for some Gothic fiction influences, hints of vampires, limited color palettes in gouache and acrylics, and experimental paper choices, as I try to find out! About This Video

In this paint-with-me, I’m basically spiraling (in a productive way) about that classic question: “Do I even have an art style?” I sit down with my favorite supplies and start poking at what my art “essence” actually is—because I bounce between doodles, fantasy illustration, travel sketchbooks, and movie scene studies, and sometimes it makes my work feel all over the place. So I lean into what I genuinely love: Gothic fiction vibes, a little hint of vampires, and working with a limited palette to see what consistently shows up when I’m not overthinking it. I do a few color studies (including a Zorn-ish palette moment) and talk through how I use Golden OPEN acrylics mixed with regular heavy body acrylics to get more control over drying time and texture. I also experiment with paper choices and finish the piece with matte gel medium for that surface and final-detail control I’m always chasing. The big takeaway: style isn’t one “look” you force—it’s the repeated decisions you naturally make when you’re following your obsessions (and yes, mine apparently include dramatic portraits and vampires).
