About This Video

In this project, I took a beautiful living room and turned it into a full-blown smart entertainment space: a 7.2.2 KEF surround setup, dual in-wall subs, and a motorized MantleMount that drops the TV down off a big fireplace for a way better viewing angle. One of the biggest details people miss is the center channel—mine is attached to the TV on purpose, because it’s your most important speaker and I don’t want the TV coming down and blocking the dialogue. The fun part is we did this in a home that wasn’t pre-wired for surround sound, with limited attic access. We still crawled our way to greatness and got it done clean: front stage, rear in-walls, and six in-ceiling speakers with the front pair set up for Atmos/front highs so the room feels immersive from more than one seat. Because it’s a large space with limited acoustic control, the dual in-wall subwoofers help fill the room evenly. To tie it all together, I integrated Control4 using T4 touchscreens (plus Halo remotes as an option) so the client can control audio, video, and lighting—this home has a big Lutron system, and Control4 plays great with it. I also showed the rack because that’s where the “brain” lives: Control4 processing, Ubiquiti network, Denon surround processing, sub amps, audio distribution, and UPS backup so the critical stuff stays up when power drops.
