About This Video

In this video I’m walking through a real smart home living room setup and highlighting a few things I’m seeing more and more on our Texas projects—especially around display size and how we handle streaming. The TV in this space is a Samsung QN80F in a massive 100-inch size, and honestly it’s hard to even get perspective because the ceilings are 20–30 feet high. TVs have evolved fast, and what used to feel “big” at 75–85 inches is now becoming the new normal while 100+ inch options keep showing up. Even though this is a 4K TV with apps built in, I don’t like relying on the TV as the computer. I want the TV to do what it’s supposed to do—be a display—so we use a dedicated stream box like a Roku (or Apple TV) to handle the processing. As TVs age and firmware changes, the built-in apps can start lagging, and separating the streamer helps keep things smooth. I also touch on higher-end options like Kaleidescape for clients who really invest in movies and want the full file quality—colors, audio, everything—but for most rooms, Roku or Apple TV is going to deliver the 4K experience people are used to. We wrap up with a quick look at a centralized lighting/art setup where switching a button powers outlets and lights up an art feature in the home.
