In this video, I’m Johan with Empire AV Services, and I break down one of the biggest questions we get: how to set up surround sound the right way. I start with the basics—what the surround numbers actually mean (2.0, 3.1, 5.1, 7.1, and beyond). I explain why that center channel is the most important speaker for movies (that’s where your dialogue lives), what the “.1” is for (your subwoofer/LFE for the bass and impact), and how Dolby Atmos adds that third number for sound that’s mastered to come from above you. Then I unbox and walk through the Denon AVR-X3800H as the “brain” of the system, focusing on what matters: inputs and outputs. I show you how HDMI sources come in (Roku, cable, PS5—labels don’t matter), how outputs go to your TV/projector, and how zone 2 works depending on receiver capabilities. From there, I get into speaker wiring and placement, how to avoid stray copper that can throw the receiver into protection mode, and why banana plugs make installs easier. Finally, I run through the on-screen Denon setup wizard, speaker test tones, Audyssey mic calibration (ear height, multiple seating positions), and network/Bluetooth setup so you can actually verify everything works before you sit down for the demo.
