If you’re planning a home theater, this is where it all starts. In this video, we break down Phase 1 of a dedicated home theater build, focusing on the most important decisions that need to happen before the walls go up. From surround sound layouts and speaker selection to projector screens, seating distances, and projector specs — this is the foundation that determines how good your theater will actually perform. We cover: • Proper surround sound layouts (7.1 + Dolby Atmos) • Speaker wiring and pre-construction planning • Media room vs true home theater speakers • Projector vs TV planning (and why you should prep for both) • Acoustic & ambient-light-rejecting screens • Seating distance standards • Projector specs that actually matter (lumens, contrast, throw ratio) This is not brand hype — it’s real-world planning based on how we design theaters every day. 👉 Have questions about your home theater project? About This Video

If you’re building a home theater and you’ve got questions, this video is where it all starts. I’m walking through Phase 1 of a dedicated theater build—the decisions you need to make before the walls go up. We get down and dirty on audio first: how many speakers your room should have, what layout makes sense, and why wiring and design have to happen pre-drywall. In this room we’re doing a 7.2.2 setup (seven channels, two subs, and two Dolby Atmos), and I explain what that actually means in real-world placement—front stage, surrounds, surround backs, and overhead sound. From there, I switch to video planning: projector or TV. My take is simple—set yourself up for both, but I’m a big projector guy because you can get a bigger screen for your dollars if you do it correctly. That means picking the right screen for the room, especially when you’ve got light to deal with. We talk acoustic screens (so the speakers can live behind the screen) and ambient-light-resistant/high-contrast materials that improve the image with lights on. I also cover seating distance standards (2–4x your screen size) and the projector specs that actually matter: lumens, aspect ratio, contrast ratio, and throw ratio—so you don’t end up with power in the wrong spot and a projector that doesn’t fit the plan.
