About This Video

In this video I shift from displays and control and zoom in on the audio setup for a movie room where placement was tight. In a perfect world, in-ceiling speakers are my last resort for home theater—but this project had real-world constraints: the designer, architect, and homeowner were the same person, and they were very specific about where we could (and couldn’t) put gear. So I took their input and built the best solution that still makes the room look clean and sound right. Up front, I used three 8-inch Episode in-ceiling speakers as the LCR, and the key detail is they’re directional—so the woofer is angled toward the seating instead of firing straight down. In the back, we used two 8-inch in-ceiling speakers that are down-firing for the rears. I also explain a common “my surrounds don’t work” issue: surround sound is directional, and some content simply won’t light up the back channels because it’s mastered differently. Finally, I break down what numbers like 5.1.2 mean, why Dolby Atmos requires Atmos-mastered content, and why this room’s 5.1 system is exactly what the client needed for movies and for tying into multiple audio zones in the house.
