From what I’ve seen, most people fail because they ignore the boring fundamentals and chase gear or vibes. They don’t really know their camera, they’re not firm with clients, they network without building real relationships, and they don’t take action. If you don’t fix those, you’ll keep repeating the same cycle.

Do I need to learn multiple camera systems to get hired?

You don’t have to own every camera, but you do need to know the basics of different ecosystems. I’ve been contracted on jobs where I wasn’t bringing my FX6 and they already had a camera package. Knowing Sony, Canon, and Blackmagic basics has helped me get hired, even when I didn’t own that camera.

I got hired as an operator for a live streaming event because I told them I had operated Blackmagic before. They straight up said other freelancers emailed them, but they didn’t have Blackmagic experience. I used to own a Pocket 4K years ago, and that knowledge paid me back later.

Be firm and be honest about what’s realistic. I made the mistake of saying yes to everything early on—drone, photos, gimbal, fast turnaround—when I didn’t even own that gear. That sets the expectation, and clients will come back thinking they can get the same deal again.

Taking action can be finding a mentor, shooting a spec project, or even creating a fake interview for your portfolio so you can land a real one. Your first film, first wedding, first corporate interview—whatever—might look bad, but who cares. The people who succeed are the ones who execute, not the ones who sit on YouTube all day talking about starting.
