About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down the top three worst pieces of advice I’ve been told throughout my filmmaking career, and I’m keeping it real because a lot of this “motivational” talk can mess you up when you’re just starting. First one: “Quit your day job and go all in.” That sounds passionate, but if you don’t have the network, the clients, the gear, or even reliable transportation, you’re setting yourself up for stress. A consistent income early on helps you pay for basics like a car, gas, insurance, and the stuff you actually need to show up and do the work. Second one: “You have to be active on social media to grow.” For me, that’s just not true. I’ve been off Instagram for almost a year and I’m still getting clients through production companies, word of mouth, and platforms like ProductionHub. Social can help, but it’s not the only way—especially if you don’t want to spend your time scrolling. Third one: “Only focus on one career.” I agree you should lock in and get obsessed with your craft, but I don’t believe in putting all your eggs in one basket. Freelancing has seasons, so I’m big on building multiple income streams inside the filmmaking niche—YouTube, AdSense, affiliate links, products, whatever makes sense—so you’re not stressing when the calendar gets dry.
