About This Video

The film industry is changing, and I’m not 100% sure if it’s for the better or for the worst—so in this video I wanted to open up the comment section and really have a community group chat about it. I was just on a contracted job with two other freelancers who have way more years in the game than me (TV and commercial heavy), and we got deep into what’s happening right now—especially with finances. As freelancers, we live and die by our day rate, and more and more it feels like clients are trying to lower the cost of video production. One big issue we talked about is how clients know there’s always someone willing to do it cheaper. On paper, a job might be a $1,200–$1,500 job, but beginners are taking those same jobs for like $300 just to get their foot in the door. And look—I get both sides, because at some point I was that person too. We also talked about how the industry doesn’t “feel” like the film industry anymore: cameras are evolving fast, AI is taking over a lot, and in reality/commercial worlds it can feel like old heads are getting replaced quick by younger shooters. My takeaway is simple: the game is changing, but there’s always going to be demand for video—and I truly believe there’s enough room for all of us to grow and still make money.
