This job was a little different for me—3-day multi-day event coverage, but I wasn’t even on my FX6 and I didn’t bring my own gear. I was contracted to operate two Blackmagic Mini URSA 4.6K G2’s by myself on sticks in the back of the room, covering keynote speakers all day. We also had a third URSA locked off in the corner with a second operator, plus a guy in the back monitoring and switching between cam 1, 2, and 3 on a panel. The craziest part was the glass: Canon 25-250’s with a 1.5x converter, so the reach was insane—but when you zoomed in, the image got that shaky, bouncy “jello wobble” because of the floor vibration, bass, and people walking nearby. Then I get into the story time—the worst mistake I’ve made on a job in a minute. One URSA had wall power, but the other tight cam was on V-mounts that only lasted about an hour. I kept calling out battery percentage through the headset (10%, then 5%), and when they finally told me to swap, the camera died mid-record. When it came back up it flashed “card error” (we were recording to SSD), and the first hour of footage was gone. I owned it, told the director, and luckily they had a backup recording from the switcher feed—but trust me, I’m not letting that happen again.
