About This Video

I got contracted again for another event job—this time it was an esports event tied in with a college football game at the UCF stadium in Orlando. I’m prepping my FX6 setup for an outdoor run, which is funny because I hardly ever use my matte box since most of my work is indoor conferences. I’m running XLR scratch audio and prepping lavs for an interview they wanted (National Guard pilot), but that part ended up getting cancelled because of the hurricane—Florida vibes. One of the biggest curveballs was my car alternator going bad the night before the event. I do all my own car work because I don’t trust mechanics, so it was just another problem to solve before getting paid to shoot. The client also wanted photography, and I don’t do photography—so I hired one of my subscribers to handle that side. That’s a real benefit of having a YouTube channel: I can tap into hungry people who want opportunities and actually share the work. We ended up getting rained out and finished two hours early, but I still got paid full two-day rates even though day one got cancelled and day two got cut short. During downtime, we talked gear—specifically FX6 vs smaller bodies—and it honestly had me thinking about grabbing an FX3 because I miss that small, compact mirrorless feel for YouTube and travel, while still being able to rig up when I need to look professional.
