About This Video

Would you buy an RV that’s been rented by hundreds of people? In this video I break down 3 pros and 3 cons of buying a retired Cruise America rental, based on what I’ve actually seen in the field as a certified RV inspector and registered technician. First, yes—these units are built by Thor, so if you’re not a Thor fan, that alone might make your decision. But I still see why people consider them, especially when the price point is lower than most used Class C options. On the “pro” side, the pricing can be a great entry point if you’re new to RVing or you want a basic second rig for cross-country travel. They’re also simple—no slides (which I consider a big bonus on a high-use rental), and the appliances are traditional RV stuff I prefer, like propane/electric fridge and a tank-style propane water heater, so you can boondock or hook up. Another big plus is maintenance records: these rentals get serviced constantly, and I typically see fresh sealant and clean oil/generator oil. On the “con” side, you’re buying high mileage (often 100,000+), limited features (no bells and whistles), and the biggest one: potential hidden issues. I’ve found prior water damage/rot even when the roof looks freshly sealed, active plumbing leaks behind cabinets, and other surprises that only show up when you really dig during an inspection. My personal take? I wouldn’t buy one—I love my Lazy Days and I don’t like how dark and basic the Cruise America interiors feel—but they can still be a solid fit for the right buyer with the right expectations and a thorough inspection.
