About This Video

You can walk through an RV show and get distracted by the bright lights and shiny stuff, but what really matters is how that RV was made—and how it’s been maintained. In Video #2 of my “How to Not Buy a Lemon” series, I break down 5 red flags I see all the time as a certified RV inspector and tech. These are the things that can cost you thousands if you miss them during a walk-through. First, I talk roofs—EPDM/TPO rubber, fiberglass, aluminum, molded fiberglass caps, PVC/composite—and why the roof type matters for care. Any hole in the roof (vents, skylights, fans, plumbing vents, solar, add-ons) is a potential water entry point if sealant fails. Then we get into slide systems (Schwintek, cable, through-frame, hydraulic), where I commonly find water intrusion and swelling/rot along slide floor edges—and why slide repairs can run $5,000–$10,000. I also cover frame/foundation issues like frame flex and cracks (especially near slide corners), plus appliance testing (electric/gas modes, fridge types, tankless vs tank water heaters, and altitude limitations). Finally, I explain why interior fit and finish matters—MDF swelling, cheap wall construction, and how build quality varies by year/model. Bottom line: maintenance is everything—no RV stays “good” if it isn’t cared for.
