When you’re shopping for an RV, the dealership you choose can make or break the whole experience. In this video, I walk you through five RV dealership red flags I see all the time as a certified RV inspector—and why each one should make you pause. The biggest one? A dealer who says, “We don’t allow third-party inspectors on the lot.” That’s a huge red flag. A good dealership shouldn’t be afraid of an independent inspection (they may ask for credentials/insurance, and that’s normal), but flat-out refusing is usually a sign you should look elsewhere. I also explain why proper hookups matter for a real inspection. If a dealer won’t provide water, power (30/50 amp), propane, or a working battery—or insists the unit stays winterized—then I can’t accurately test systems for leaks, safety, and function. My inspection is a snapshot in time, and I need the RV set up like my client is about to take it camping that day. I cover time-limit games (like forcing inspections during a quick PDI), shady extra fees for “a tech to follow the inspector,” and the big no-no: trying to get you to sign the contract before the inspection. Protect yourself by making the contract pending a third-party inspection so the dealership still has urgency to make things right.
