In this video I walk through the bigger Home Assistant 0.117 frontend changes landing in the beta (starting Oct. 21). Hacktoberfest really showed up this month—there were a ton of PRs and quality-of-life fixes—and I’m focusing on the stuff you can actually see and feel day-to-day in Lovelace and the UI. The headline feature is the new compact header in core Lovelace from Maykar. It finally kills that huge top title area and gives you back a chunk of screen space (especially on mobile), while still expanding when you’re editing so the UI doesn’t get cramped. Then there’s the new Quick Bar (Ctrl+P) which is honestly one of the highest-potential features: instant entity search, quick actions, and a growing command list for reload-type tasks and navigation. I also cover weather card improvements (better secondary info with an attribute picker, wind direction, and less text truncation), entity picker search finally matching by name (not just entity_id), and Thomas Lovén’s YAML editor option for automations/scripts so you can copy/paste full YAML in one place. Rounding it out: dismiss-all notifications, dark mode options for picture elements, automatic Lovelace resource type detection by file extension, one-click copy for System Health info, and a much-needed entity filter in the History panel. Beta is beta though—don’t run it on something that can’t break.
