Here’s what’s on the bench today: an Epiphone Les Paul Studio that’s got a lot of dirt and dust on it, needs new strings, and needs to be cleaned up really good. In this video I walk you through my real-world used-guitar shop routine—first I plug it in and make sure the output jack and electronics are working, then I pull the strings, clean everything up, and hit the pots with electronic contact cleaner so we don’t end up with scratchy volume/tone knobs. I’m a buy/sell/trade shop, and I’m telling you, the second a customer hears static, that guitar goes right back on the wall. From there I hydrate the fretboard with Music Nomad F-One oil, get into the corners, snug up the tuner nuts with a 10mm wrench (don’t over-tighten), and polish the frets with a fingerboard guard and 1000-grit paper—just cleaning, not leveling/crowning. I also swap out a discolored bridge using parts from my random drawer (thanks to all you guys who donate parts), replace a missing pickguard screw, and string it up with SIT Power Wound Nickel 10–46 “Stay In Tune” strings. Then I do a quick play test, mess around with the “kill switch” trick (neck volume down), and remind you why I love these Epiphone Les Pauls: they’re workhorses that just get the job done—especially when the simplest design is the best.
