About This Video

Hey guys, welcome back—down here at ZIMM'S GUITARS in beautiful Mesa, Arizona, we re-string a lot of guitars, and today I’ve got a Godin Summit Classic (made in Canada) on the bench that’s dusty and ready to be cleaned up for resale. Before I pull the old strings, I check the neck relief (with my “not straight edge”) and note this one’s a short scale, Gibson length, with relief that’s totally workable, so I leave it right where it is. I also take a quick look over the hardware—there’s some corrosion and pitting starting on the tailpiece, but it’s original, so I’m not swapping it out. From there it’s a full clean-and-prep: Guitar Juice Tonic for fingerprints and that Arizona dust, and a little F1 oil on the dark fingerboard (looks like ebony to me, but you know how that goes these days). After the board soaks and I wipe the excess, I inspect the frets and overall condition—this guitar’s in great shape with just a few small scuffs. Then I restring it with Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9–42, tune it up, and take it up front to play it through the P90s (yep, you’ll get some 60-cycle hum). I also mess with the little boost button and let you guys hear what it’s doing—leave me a comment on what you think that switch is actually doing.
