About This Video

All right, guys—welcome back to the Zimm’s Guitars YouTube channel, where we rering guitars. In this one I’ve got a Laguna electric on the bench (missing a B string), and I walk you through getting it back into playing shape like we do every day here at my buy/sell/trade shop in Mesa, Arizona. I check it over, note the maple neck, the “designed in the USA” vibe, and a Wilkinson bridge (quality bridge), then I plug it in and make sure the five-way and electronics are working before I start tearing into the trem. Once I pop the back plate, I find only two springs and even a little chunk of wood where somebody tried to block the trem. I add a spring right out of the gate, pull strings, clean the fingerboard with Music Nomad F1 oil, and restring it with an older pack of JHS Boomers 10–52. I also tighten the claw to get the Wilkinson laying nice and flat, deal with a stiff volume knob by spraying the electronics (AutoZone cleaner works), and I give my usual warning: if your back plate still has plastic on it, pull it off before it becomes a forever problem. Then we get into the bigger question—did Guitar Center kill Laguna too soon? Laguna was a GC house brand (introduced around 2008), and I honestly think they’re better than the Mitchell stuff that replaced them. If GC would’ve stuck with Laguna, I think the quality and recognition could’ve finally caught on. Greg jumps in at the end and plays it so you can hear what it can do.
